Roots Never Forget

Roots Never Forget follows the intertwined lives of Kareem Johnson and Ryan Wade, two young African American men bound by friendship and tested by circumstance. When Ryan is falsely implicated in a violent crime involving a powerful political family, his future is abruptly at risk. Kareem, shaped by time spent in West Africa and guided by a strong sense of justice, refuses to accept the official story. As fear and uncertainty close in, loyalty becomes an act of resistance.

As Ryan sits in jail, Kareem and Ryan's wife, Mira, confront a legal system marked by indifference and quiet corruption. Kareem's search for the truth pulls him into a web of hidden motives, compromised authorities, and long-buried secrets. At the same time, he is forced to examine his own past, including revelations about his family and origins that challenge his understanding of who he is. The pursuit of justice becomes inseparable from a deeper search for identity and belonging.

Roots Never Forget is a novel about memory, responsibility, and the lasting impact of where one comes from. Said Benjeloun explores friendship under pressure, the weight of inherited histories, and the human cost of systemic injustice. Grounded in character and moral urgency, the story reflects the struggle to protect truth and dignity in a world where power often shapes outcomes. It is a compelling examination of how roots shape lives, even when forgotten or denied.
