Clarke Lewis is caught up in the war fever that sweeps across Virginia in the spring of 1861. He leaves his wife and home in Greenbrier County, Virginia (now West Virginia) and enlists in the Confederate army as an infantryman. He and his brother leave for the war together and their adventures are intertwined for the next four years. You will experience the shock of his first battle and see him conquer his fears as he performs his duties time and again. See his guardian angel and be amazed at its appearance on the fields of battle.
Feel his passion for the women in his life as he juggles the horrors of war with the gentleness of love. Emotional turmoil swirls around him as his Northern born wife refuses to support his loyalty to Virginia, divorces him and leaves the state with her family. Renewed love blooms when he meets someone else even as the war escalates and danger increases. You will meet the cast of characters from the times and laugh at their hilarious sayings, mannerisms and stories. Mountain men, soldiers, slaves and slave holders, generals, and presidents each bring their emotions to create the heart and soul of Roaring Creek.
Hear the boom of cannons in the streets of Lewisburg, along Dry Creek in White Sulphur Springs and the crack of muskets among the cliffs of Droop Mountain. Experience the unbelievable courage of the Virginia Military cadets as they assault the enemy cannons at New Market. Stand in the trenches of Cold Harbor and beat back attacks by the Northern troops and see the horrible carnage as 7,000 Yankee soldiers become casualties in twenty minutes. Feel the despair and hopelessness of being a prisoner at Point Lookout, Maryland where starvation andcold threaten to rob him of his life and dignity. Go to his final battle at Winchester and you will never look at the Confederate soldier the same way again. This book and its cast of characters will make you think of them just before you drop off to sleep at night.
