Les cuento cómo surgió este ingenioso proyecto. Elsa, mi madre, fue una intelectual, y su pasión por investigar temas sobre la mujer se tradujo en una gran biblioteca, plena de autoras famosas. Recuerdo entre ellas, a Simone De Beauvoir, Margarite Yourcenar, Colette y por supuesto, a Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. Con mamá solíamos conversar sobre esta pionera del feminismo, nacida en el México colonial. Nos gustaba mucho su Segundo sueño, las Cartas a Sor Filotea y su relación con sus mecenas, los virreyes. Hablamos tanto de Juanita, que se transformó en un miembro más de la familia!
Otro de los favoritos maternos era el poeta, diplomático mexicano y Premio Nobel de literatura en 1990, Octavio Paz. Solíamos discutir su libro Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz o las trampas de la Fe. En ella, el autor la destacaba como la décima musa de la lengua castellana; además, nos hizo gracia la anécdota sobre cómo logró convencer al académico estadounidense, Alan S. Trueblood para que tradujera al inglés algunos poemas selectos de esta religiosa intelectual. Aunque Trueblood era un acreditado profesor de Estudios Hispanos, se sintió intimidado con las rimas de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz. La exuberancia creativa de su prosa, teatro y versos, hicieron dudar a este profesor en el logro de una traducción a la altura. Según comentaba, parecía ser que la lengua inglesa era mucho más estructurada (y fría) que la de Cervantes, donde los hablantes incurren en espontáneas rimas cotidianas. De esta forma, ambos estudiosos se dieron a la tarea de traducir.
