L'historien ne peut manquer de s'interroger sur ce paradoxe: angevin par son père Henri II et aquitain par sa mère Aliénor, Richard Ier, roi d'Angleterre de 1189 à 1199, ne résida dans l'île que six mois au total et n'en parla sans doute jamais la langue... Il se consacra beaucoup plus à la lutte contre ses vassaux du continent, contre le roi de France et les Sarrasins qu'au gouvernement de son royaume. Et pourtant il demeure certainement, depuis bientôt huit siècles, le plus aimé des souverains anglais.
Cette popularité ne doit rien à la légende: les contemporains, unanimes, nous le décrivent comme le roi des rois terrestres , nul n'étant allé plus loin que lui pour l'ardeur, la magnanimité, la chevalerie et toutes autres vertus . N'est-ce pas lui qui enleva Chypre aux Byzantins et la place d'Acre au redoutable Saladin, le vainqueur de Jérusalem; ne fut-il pas l'un des plus grands troubadours de son temps? Brave jusqu'à la témérité, fastueux, lettré, il incarne admirablement l'idéal chevaleresque qui était celui du XIIe siècle; tout roi qu'il fût, il ne se pardonnait pas même ses écarts (notamment la sodomie ) ou ses manquements de parole (car il était d'un caractère changeant _ oc e no, oui et non, l'avait-on surnommé) et s'en accusa publiquement à plusieurs reprises avec force manifestations _ sincères _ de repentir. Longtemps absent en raison de la croisade et aussi d'une interminable captivité dans les geôles de l'empereur Henri VI, il mourut à quarante et un ans près de Limoges en assiégeant un vassal révolté. Disparition prématurée, infiniment dommageable pour l'Angleterre et pour l'Aquitaine, mais peut-être bénéfique pour sa mémoire. Le monde était en effet en train de changer: aurait-il pu ou su devenir un grand politique avec ce que cela requiert de cynisme, de calcul et de dissimulation? Connue en France et à l'étranger pour ses travaux d'histoire médiévale, Régine Pernoud a publié de nombreux ouvrages qui sont devenus de véritables classiques parmi lesquels on peut citer La Femme au temps des cathédrales, Jeanne d'Arc (en coll. avec M.-V. Clin, 1986) ou encore Histoire de la bourgeoisie en France.
