Die gro e Zukunftsaufgabe Europas ist die Neugestaltung seiner Verhältnisse zur Welt. Gemeinsame Perspektiven können heute nicht mehr allein durch ein Mehr an Technologie, Geld oder Bodenschätzen gewonnen werden, sondern entstehen wesentlich aus reparativen Prozessen. Die grö ten Zerstörungen und Verwundungen - etwa Genozide, durch Kriege erzeugte Traumata, vernichtete Kulturgüter, die Folgen von Erderhitzung, Arten- oder Sprachensterben - sind jedoch irreparabel. Materielle und juristische Kompensationsprozesse erweisen sich hier als unabdingbar, reichen aber allein nicht aus. Kulturelle Praktiken der Reparation stellen demgegenüber eine Arbeit am Irreparablen dar. Ihre Bedeutung besteht darin, dass sie Vielschichtigkeit, Vieldeutigkeit und Vielstimmigkeit herstellen können. So lässt sich die Spannung zwischen irreparablen Zerstörungen und der Notwendigkeit, dennoch weiterzuleben, ausloten, erfahrbar machen und in etwas Neues wenden.
