Red Rock Adventure is a work of fiction written for young adults and suitable for the whole family. As well as being a suspenseful adventure story, it also presents a microcosm of Israelis and Jordanians learning to face challenges and solve problems together and come to a greater understanding and appreciation of each other. The story is set in 1995 against the background of the Israel-Arab Peace Process in its early days. It is summer vacation, the last before Mordy Pepperman, an Israeli teenager, and his friends are due to be drafted into the Israeli army. They want to make the most of their last taste of freedom, so they plan a trip to the mysterious, rose red city of Petra. In the past, many Israeli travelers risked their lives trying to steal across the Jordanian border to see this ancient Nabatean city, one of the wonders of the world. But now, with a peace treaty between Israel and Jordan, Israelis can travel there freely. When Mordy and five of his friends get to Petra, they are befriended by an exuberant Bedouin family - Abdul Ghani Karim and his sons Jazzal and Ali - who serve as their guides and introduce them to true Bedouin hospitality. The boys sleep under the stars and are served breakfast the next morning in the Karim family's goatskin tent. Then they set forth, planning to spend the next few days exploring Petra. By the end of their visit they have also unexpectedly explored what it is like to face terrorists, jackals and other dangers with their new Jordanian friends. The boys are caught up in a chilling adventure, involving a plot by Islamic terrorists to blow up part of Petra along with a busload of visiting Israeli parliamentarians and their Jordanian hosts. The boys cooperate in an attempt to foil the plot and in the process they learn to rely on each other. By the end of their visit they have also learned some valuable lessons about true friendship, courage and the intricacies of growing up. The book would make an excellent bar mitzva present.
