This paper addresses the power play between the Western actors and the Russian Federation in the South Caucasus. The territory is comprised of three independent states - Georgia, Azerbaijan and Armenia. The purpose of this work is to find out why the Russian Federation wants to dominate this region and how Russia reacts to the interests and wishes of the Western states which want to merge the South Caucasian states with the European Community. In order to achieve this aim it was decided to examine documents of state institutions of the Russian Federation and media texts written in Russian, English or German.
