Rural Felicity is a two-act operatic comedy written by John Baldwin Buckstone in 1834. The play is set in a rural village and follows the story of two young lovers, Tom and Lucy, who are forbidden to marry by Lucy's father, Mr. Ashfield. Mr. Ashfield wants Lucy to marry a wealthy landowner, Mr. Greville, instead. Tom and Lucy devise a plan to elope, but their plans are complicated by the arrival of Mr. Greville and his sister, Miss Greville. Miss Greville is in love with Tom and wants to marry him, while Mr. Greville is interested in Lucy's dowry. The play features a cast of colorful characters, including a group of village gossips, a bumbling constable, and a scheming servant. The plot twists and turns as the characters scheme and plot to achieve their desires. Rural Felicity is a lighthearted and entertaining play that explores themes of love, class, and social expectations. Buckstone's witty dialogue and catchy songs make this play a classic example of 19th-century operatic comedy. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
