A Recent Review:
Running From Hippos: A Memoir of Trauma and Depression by BD Timmins is a moving, powerful autobiography about surviving the darkness of trauma. Starting with the early days, the author takes the reader back to the beginning of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, onward through the turmoil of depression, self-harm, and suicidal ideations, then into the light of triumph. It wasn't an easy journey, but anyone who has been there will relate on a personal level. For anyone that feels alone in their suffering or feels that the ghosts of abuse are still haunting them as an adult, they will get empathy and advice that will help them and touch them. No doubt this book was cathartic for the author, but it can be for readers too. Some may assume that victims are rendered weak, but it takes a strong person to survive abuse and rise above it. This would make a great book club selection and would benefit those in support groups. If anyone is looking for a good resource on trauma, they should be sure to read Running From Hippos by BD Timmins.
Anyone who has suffered physical or mental abuse of any kind, or has been to that dark place that we know as depression, will be able to relate to what I have experienced. Back Cover:
After enduring years of being a victim of other people's lust and aggression, insecurity and self-loathing paved the way to sexual and physical abuse and brutal treatment. Rebellious, lonely, and self-destructive, I relied on my 'stronger self' to bear much of my trauma. Soon, I found myself on the rollercoaster called depression. Running From Hippos explains how I managed to stand up to my aggressors, drag myself back from that terrible 'dark place' and learn how to live again.
Often extremely emotional, sometimes funny, occasionally thought-provoking, this is my story.
