Running A Thousand Miles For Freedom is a memoir written by William Craft, an escaped slave from Georgia, and his wife Ellen Craft. The book chronicles their daring escape from slavery in 1848, during which Ellen disguised herself as a white male slave owner and William posed as her slave. The couple traveled over 1,000 miles to freedom in Philadelphia, using various modes of transportation and evading slave hunters along the way. The book also details their lives as free people in the North, including their work as abolitionists and their involvement in the Underground Railroad. The book provides a firsthand account of the horrors of slavery and the lengths that people were willing to go to escape it.
