The history of modernity is often told as a story of separation. According to one influential narrative, the advance of science, the triumph of rational inquiry, and the emergence of secular political institutions gradually displaced the authority of religion from the center of Western life. The Enlightenment, in this account, inaugurated a new age in which reason replaced revelation, criticism superseded tradition, and the human mind increasingly sought explanations of the world without recourse to the sacred. Religion survived, but its cultural prominence appeared diminished. It became, for many thinkers, a private matter rather than a comprehensive framework for understanding reality.
