Romances Sans Paroles is a collection of poems written by the French poet Paul Verlaine and originally published in 1874. The collection is divided into three sections: Ariettes Oubliees, Paysages Belges, and Aquarelles. The poems in Ariettes Oubliees are love songs that express the poet's feelings of longing and loss. Paysages Belges describes the landscapes and people of Belgium, where Verlaine lived for a time. Aquarelles is a series of impressionistic sketches of nature scenes. In 1891, Verlaine added a fourth section to the collection called Birds In The Night. These poems are darker and more introspective than the earlier sections, exploring themes of despair, loneliness, and mortality.Throughout the collection, Verlaine employs a symbolist style of poetry, using vivid imagery and suggestive language to convey his emotions and ideas. The poems are characterized by their musicality and use of free verse, as well as their exploration of themes such as love, nature, and the human condition.Overall, Romances Sans Paroles is considered a masterpiece of French poetry, and Verlaine is recognized as one of the most important poets of the late 19th century. His influence can be seen in the work of many later poets, including Arthur Rimbaud and Charles Baudelaire. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
