The Fortunate Mistress, also known as Roxana, stands as a compelling example of Daniel Defoe's narrative skill. Published in 1724, this novel recounts the adventurous life of a woman, Roxana, as she navigates the complexities of 18th-century society. Abandoned by her husband and facing poverty, Roxana uses her wit and beauty to secure her financial independence, becoming involved in a series of relationships that lead her across Europe.
Defoe masterfully employs the epistolary form, drawing the reader into Roxana's world through her first-person account. The novel explores themes of social mobility, the economic realities facing women, and the moral compromises one makes in pursuit of survival and wealth. The Fortunate Mistress offers a fascinating glimpse into the social and moral landscape of its time and remains a captivating read for those interested in historical fiction and early English novels.
