Throughout the book, Weekley provides numerous examples and anecdotes that illustrate the rich and complex history of names. The Romance of Names is a fascinating and informative read for anyone interested in language, culture, and history.1914. The author's aim in this book was to steer a clear course between a too learned and a too superficial treatment, and rather to show how surnames are formed, than to adduce innumerable examples which the reader should be able to solve for himself. The subject matter is divided into a number of rather short chapters, dealing with the various classes and subdivision into which surnames fall; but the natural association which exists between names often prevailed over rigid classification. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
