Though there have been numerous studies on lynching in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, most begin their assessments in 1882, leaving a glaring break in the lynching record from 1865 to 1881. There were more than 3,000 recorded lynchings during that time frame, and the top cause of lynching in the early Jim Crow years was politicide--killing people for voting for the wrong candidate, or even for attempting to vote at all.
This new study uncovers the missing years of the lynching narrative from 1865 to 1881, illuminating a 17-year gap in the record. Drawing from historical books and newspaper publications, it is divided into yearly chapters that both identify the details and provide historical context for every known lynching case.
