Rimbaud the Boy and the Poet is a definitive biographical and critical study of Arthur Rimbaud, one of the most influential and enigmatic figures in modern literature. This work delves into the meteoric rise and abrupt departure of the French poet who revolutionized verse before the age of twenty. The book explores the psychological and environmental factors that shaped Rimbaud's rebellious spirit, tracing his journey from a brilliant student in Charleville to the visionary creator of A Season in Hell and Illuminations.
Author Edgell Rickword provides an insightful analysis of Rimbaud's theory of the voyant and his pursuit of a systematic derangement of the senses to attain poetic truth. By examining the interplay between Rimbaud's turbulent life-including his volatile relationship with Paul Verlaine-and his groundbreaking contributions to Symbolism, the text offers a comprehensive look at the youth who became a foundational architect of modernist poetry. This study remains an essential resource for readers interested in the Decadent movement, French literary history, and the enduring legacy of a poet who famously chose silence over fame at the height of his creative powers.
