Riley Moonbrook is a young tinkerer and watchmaker who knows how to repair broken gears, balance delicate mechanisms, and keep the clocks of his home running accurately. What he cannot repair is the mysterious illness consuming his mother Clara Windmere. She is losing memories, growing weaker, and slowly forgetting the people and places that make up her life. Then, at exactly 12:01 AM, the great carillon of the Old Quarter fails. Every clock stops, every reliquary streetlamp goes dark, and a terrifying black force begins erasing the city as though its streets and citizens were words being removed from an unfinished manuscript. The only light that answers the darkness is an ancient brass lantern inherited from Riley's grandfather. Inside it awakens Faye Moonbeam, a tiny sovereign spark fairy who reveals that Riley's city is part of a living magical story. The lantern contains one of the last surviving sparks of the reliquary, and Riley must become an Ember-Bearer if he wants to keep his mother alive. With the Null-Weft spreading through the Old Quarter, Riley enters a city where streets can disappear, memories can be stolen, and shadow creatures hunt the remaining sources of light.Riley's journey brings him together with Scout Everwood, a lamplighter apprentice, Elara Whitmore, a determined archivist, and Briar Honeywood, a master watchmaker. Together they uncover the truth behind the failing world: the dawn fairies' light has been siphoned away, the history of the Old Quarter is being unwritten, and the memories of its people help keep the world real. Riley's greatest strength is not a warrior's weapon but the patience, precision, and stubborn care of a boy who has spent his life repairing things others consider too small to notice. As the Null-Weft reaches the heart of the city, Riley carries the lantern toward the Primordial Bell Tower and the Primordial Hearth. He learns that saving his mother is inseparable from saving the memories and lives of everyone around him. In the final struggle, light, memory, and courage must be joined to restore what has been erased. With Faye beside him and dawn spreading across the Old Quarter, Riley helps break the cycle of darkness. Clara's memories and the city's living story are protected, the ancient covenant is renewed, and the streets shine beneath a golden morning. Riley discovers that repairing a broken world is much like repairing a clock: every tiny piece matters.
