The Right of Way is a novel by Gilbert Parker that tells the story of Charley Steele and another character whose paths cross in unexpected ways. Charley Steele is a man who has fallen from grace due to his drinking and gambling habits, and is now a drifter wandering the Canadian countryside. The other character is a French-Canadian peasant named Jean Jacques Barbille, who is a devout Catholic and a successful farmer. When Charley Steele accidentally kills Barbille's son in a drunken brawl, he is forced to face the consequences of his actions and the two men's lives become intertwined. The novel explores themes of redemption, forgiveness, and the power of faith. It is considered one of Parker's most popular works and has been adapted for film and stage.1913. Part Twelve of Eighteen Volumes. Gilbert, Canadian-born novelist and politician, his literary reputation lies primarily on his earlier descriptive, dramatic and historic Canadian stories. He moved to England in 1889 and later served in Parliament.
