Revelations - the most Amazing Love Story ever to emerge from the Archives of World War II. Book 1 of the multi-volume, non-fiction Love and War Series(tm).
Two young Army soldiers - the pilot and the nurse - deep in love and eager to stand together at the altar. But then, the winds of war suddenly whisked them away to battle, on opposite sides of the planet.
For the final two and one-half years of the war they did not see each other nor so much as hear the other's voice. All they had were letters. And so between them they exchanged over 4,000 pages of love and longing, life and death, fear and fury, joy and despair - biding their time until they could reunite.
While she was in Italy, sawing off tattered remnants of arms and legs, desperately trying to save young Yanks caught up in two of the bloodiest and most prolonged battles of the war - Anzio & Cassino - he was sweating out combat cargo missions. Flying overloaded, unarmed and unescorted C-47's low & slow - deep in the roadless wilderness of Burma - he was immersed in the 3-month mayhem as Merrill's Marauders slogged - on foot, 750 miles through primitive swamps, jungles and mountains - routing the Japanese every step of the way.
In the course of his whirlwind 14-months in the air, he flew an astonishing 250 unarmed, unescorted combat missions - sandwiched between enemy bullets from below and 50-mm Japanese Zero slugs from above. He finally returned stateside in the spring of 1945, humbly laden with Six Air Medals and Four Distinguished Flying Crosses - one of the most highly decorated pilots of World War II.
After the war, the letters, private diaries, field combat notes, flight logs, top secret theater maps and a treasure trove of other archives were relegated to silent darkness. Until nearly a decade after they passed, when their granddaughter Sunshine, and her father stumbled across the musty old records.
Over the next 20 years - from 2006 to 2026 - the couple's youngest son labored through the process of discovery, organization, transcription and exhaustive, deep-dive research - while simultaneously outlining, writing, editing and rewriting the incredible odyssey of love and war. Along the way, he stitched together the tale of the two young soldiers - from the day she was sworn in, exactly nine months before Pearl Harbor, until she finally steamed back home, across the icy gray Atlantic in November of 1945 - one of the most combat-hardened, battle-tested nurses of the War.
In Revelations, the reader is taken on a whirlwind journey . . . from the training bases and hospitals of Michigan and Texas; across the vast Atlantic, and on to the bleak and gritty sands of the Sahara Desert . . . from the 12-leg, 12,000 mile flight across the vast Atlantic, Darkest Africa, and the Arabian Sea - on to India, Burma and China . . . from the dizzying heights of the Himalayan Hump airlift to the deadly skies of the CBI . . . their story plays out via a thrilling, page-turner narrative; interlaced with handwritten excerpts revealing their most intimate secrets, passions and fears.
