Responsible Drinking: A Discreet Inquiry and a Modest Proposal is a thought-provoking analysis of the social and ethical dimensions of alcohol consumption during a pivotal era in American history. Written during the height of the Prohibition era, Robert C. Binkley offers a nuanced perspective on the so-called liquor problem, moving beyond the binary of total abstinence versus lawlessness to explore the concept of personal responsibility.
The work applies a scholarly yet accessible lens to the debate, questioning the effectiveness of state-enforced morality and proposing a more balanced, self-regulated approach to consumption. Binkley's inquiry delves into the relationship between the individual and the law, examining how social norms and personal discipline can serve as more effective regulators than legislative mandates. As a significant historical document, this book provides essential context for the sociology of the early 20th century and the evolving public policy regarding controlled substances. It remains a fascinating study of how society grapples with the tension between individual liberty and public order, making it an invaluable resource for historians, sociologists, and those interested in the history of temperance and social reform.
