After 7 million Jews were annihilated in the Holocaust, the international community vowed that they will never again allow the horror of genocide to occur. Unfortunately, they either did not act quickly enough or just stood by as genocides occurred in areas such as Cambodia, Rwanda and Bosnia. On the other hand, as the number of atrocities in Kosovo began to increase, the international community rallied together to intervene. Serbs and Albanians have a long history of violence against each other and in 1998, Serbs began a systematic campaign of terror against ethnic Albanians. They forced thousands from their homes, assaulted and executed them. The U.S. and NATO quickly intervened in an attempt to prevent further slaughter for Albanians expelled into the mountains as winter approached.
