This book draws on four case studies of quantitative linguistic research methodologies - psycholinguistic, production sociophonetic, perception sociophonetic and corpus linguistic - to address the theoretical and methodological question of how to handle the problems of essentialism without abandoning quantitative approaches entirely. Quantitative research into language, gender, and identity risks assuming an essentialist position towards identity, insofar as identities are positioned in neat categories that might show some form of inter-group difference. However, post-structuralist philosophy highlights how identity is neither static nor easily categorizable, and there is therefore sometimes a disconnect between the philosophical positioning that language, gender, and identity scholars can - and ideally, should - take, and the methodological affordances of quantitative research methodologies. The main audience for this work will be academics and students in language, gender, and identity studies, as well as others interested in quantitative research on these topics.
