The loud sound of machine guns right outside my window left me paralyzed with fear. It was early in the morning and I could hear my mother screaming, Oh my God, oh my God, please help us! Rescued by the Light is the story of my childhood on a beautiful island I called home. I was born in Cuba, 90 miles from Key West, Florida. Life had treated me well until Fidel Castro declared himself a Communist. He came with promises of free education, free medical care, and a system of equality for all people. As the repression showed its strength, executions, forced labor, deportation, and beatings were an almost everyday occurrence. However, during our painful journey of losing everything we owned, we gained our most valuable possession-our freedom. This is my story.
