This is a record of the proceedings and speeches delivered at a significant public meeting held on June 26th, 1849, by the National Association for the Protection of British Industry and Capital. The report offers insights into the economic debates of the mid-19th century, specifically concerning the protection of British industries against foreign competition.
The speeches and discussions provide a detailed account of the arguments for and against free trade policies, highlighting the concerns of British manufacturers and capitalists regarding the impact of imported goods on domestic production and employment. This historical document serves as a valuable resource for understanding the economic policies and social attitudes prevalent during a pivotal period in British economic history. It sheds light on the challenges faced by British industry and the strategies employed to maintain its competitive edge in a rapidly changing global market.
