Reply to Hayne is a famous speech delivered by Daniel Webster in the United States Senate on January 26, 1830. The speech was a response to a debate with Robert Y. Hayne, a senator from South Carolina, who argued that states had the right to nullify federal laws they deemed unconstitutional. Webster's speech, which is considered one of the greatest speeches in American history, defended the supremacy of the federal government and the Constitution. He argued that the Union was not a compact between states, but a perpetual and indissoluble union of the people. Webster's eloquent defense of the Union and the Constitution helped to solidify national unity and became a cornerstone of American political thought.
