The Religion of a Sensible American is a book written by David Starr Jordan, an American educator, naturalist, and peace activist. Published in 1902, this book presents Jordan's personal views on religion and spirituality, which he believed should be based on reason and scientific inquiry rather than blind faith and superstition. Jordan argues that religion should not be seen as a set of dogmatic beliefs or rituals, but rather as a way of life that promotes moral and ethical values, social justice, and personal growth. He emphasizes the importance of individual freedom and autonomy in religious matters, and criticizes organized religion for its tendency to impose its doctrines and rules on people. The book also discusses the role of science in shaping our understanding of the world and our place in it, and how this knowledge can enrich our spiritual lives. Jordan advocates for a rational and pragmatic approach to religion, one that is open to new ideas and perspectives and seeks to reconcile faith with reason. Overall, The Religion of a Sensible American is a thought-provoking and insightful work that challenges traditional notions of religion and offers a fresh perspective on spirituality and morality. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
