The story takes place in the Kentucky hemp fields and follows the life of a young man named David Carrington. David is a farmer who becomes involved in the production of hemp, which was a major cash crop in the area at the time. However, he soon discovers that the industry is rife with corruption and greed, and he must navigate the dangerous waters of politics and business to protect his land and livelihood. Along the way, David falls in love with a young woman named Lucy Worth, and the two must fight to stay together despite the obstacles in their path. The novel explores themes of love, justice, and the struggle for power in a rapidly changing world. Allen was born on a farm near Lexington, Kentucky. Later, he moved to New York City to pursue writing full time. Many of his works reflect Kentucky themes. In The Reign of Law the main character questions religious orthodoxy and examines Darwinism while attending the College of the Bible in Lexington.
