On 1 December 2014, a woman in a black abaya walked into an Abu Dhabi shopping mall with a knife hidden in her sock. Ninety-two minutes later she walked out. An American teacher was dying on the bathroom floor. Police released the CCTV within forty-eight hours. The face was covered. The gender was unknown - the Arabic caption on the official release carried both pronouns, side by side, because nobody could tell which one to use. The press called her the Reem Island Ghost. Two days later she was in custody. Seven months after that she was executed by firing squad, fourteen days after sentencing, under a counter-terrorism law that had been on the books for three months when the killing happened.
