Sustainability seems to be the new world order to improve the human-earth relationship. It is probably a realization to regain the 'long-lost'- and rebuild a 'long-lasting' human-nature interrelationship. Sustainability is truly the natural inheritance of survival within the ecosystem and is evident to all living and non-living entities, except modern humans, who rely on technology for their livelihoods. How essential and urgent is it to restore this inheritance with the earth? Who will take responsibility for the damage that modern humans have caused to the extra-human earth? Are our efforts too entangled in prediction, resilience, and the overuse of technology to resist natural processes and sustainability? Undoubtedly, we have gone too far and evolved into an entirely unsustainable new species, the Anthropogenius, an offshoot of Homo sapiens.
The current definition of sustainability is ambiguous in its approach to these conundrums, challenges, and demands, likely leading to pseudo-sustainable approaches. Sustainability, as a keyword, primarily demands rebuilding, accepting, and adapting our relationship with the natural processes, which we presently define as complex due to inadequate knowledge about them. Such a definition, therefore, needs to be founded on greater knowledge of the Earth, thereby improving a commoner's Earth IQ. However, gaining and waiting for complete knowledge can be seen as a delay in achieving real sustainability. Rather, the forgotten natural habitats of human-ecological coexistence may be revealed from sustainable living practices that pre-industrial humans followed. Terms such as de-technologization and de-evolution may no longer be misnomers as we adapt to sustainability.
This book explores why it is imperative to redefine the meaning of Sustainability, emphasizing the Earth Factor over the Human Factor. It is a sequel to 'Redefining Sustainability, ' and future volumes focus on the economy and sustainable living practices as further editions in this series.
Truly, if we are at this crossroads, searching for new habitable planets in the Universe, we need to preserve our own planetary habitat; therefore, let us first define how to behave on this planet!
