Red Robe and Grey Robe: Or Richelieu Defied is a historical novel written by Victor Hugo and originally published in 1901. The story takes place in France during the 17th century and centers around the political and social tensions between the two powerful factions of the time: the Red Robes and the Grey Robes. The Red Robes represent the nobility and the aristocracy, while the Grey Robes represent the bourgeoisie and the common people. The novel follows the story of two young lovers, Henri de Lagardre and Blanche de Caylus, who find themselves caught in the middle of this conflict. Henri, a skilled swordsman and former soldier, is hired by the Red Robes to assassinate the Duke of Nevers, a powerful member of the Grey Robes. However, when Henri discovers that the Duke is actually his best friend, he refuses to go through with the assassination and instead decides to protect him from the Red Robes. As Henri and Blanche navigate the dangerous political landscape of 17th century France, they must also confront their own personal demons and struggles. Along the way, they encounter a cast of colorful characters, including the infamous Cardinal Richelieu, who serves as the primary antagonist of the story.
