The Wizard had learned something dangerous by the end of Book One.
Most mysteries became smaller when examined closely.
That was supposed to be reassuring.
Instead, it made the remaining ones more interesting.
The first book had opened the Soviet files and established the rules. Tunguska had shown that a natural explanation could be every bit as astonishing as the legend. Dyatlov had shown how a tragedy could grow layers of mythology around an event that was already terrible enough without monsters. Kirlian photography had taught the Wizard that a photograph could be genuine while its interpretation was wrong. Psychokinesis and telepathy had forced experiments to become stricter. Remote viewing had shown that government interest was not the same thing as proof. Petrozavodsk had demonstrated how a rocket could become a jellyfish in the sky. SETKA had revealed that Soviet scientists and military investigators really had collected anomalous reports. And the missile-base case had taught one final lesson:

MULTIPLE WITNESSES MULTIPLE OBJECTS.
A PHOTOGRAPH DOES NOT EXPLAIN ITSELF.
And, written somewhat larger than necessary:
IF SOMETHING PUSHES THE OBJECT, FIND THE PUSH.
Anya stood looking at them.

The Wizard looked pleased.
You sound surprised.

That was the end of the compliment.
On the table sat three piles.
The first was enormous.
EXPLAINED OR PROBABLY EXPLAINED
Rocket launches.
Astronomical objects.
Atmospheric phenomena.
Equipment problems.
Misidentifications.
Stories that had grown in translation.
The second pile was also large.
INSUFFICIENT DATA
A light seen once.
A photograph without provenance.
A witness interviewed thirty years later.
A radar story with no radar record.
A spectacular claim whose original document could not be found.
The Wizard disliked that pile.
It was not mysterious enough to be exciting and not documented enough to be useful.
Then there was the third pile.
It was small.
Anya had placed it deliberately in the center of the table.
RESIDUE
The Wizard touched it.
These are the ones nobody explained?
No.
She corrected him immediately.
These are the ones we cannot yet confidently explain from the evidence available to us.
That is much less dramatic.
It is also why they matter.
Book Two would live in that distinction. The Wizard had discovered that the easiest UFO case in the world was one with no evidence.
Anything could explain it.
Aliens.
Atmospheric plasma.
Secret aircraft.
Time travelers.
A misidentified star.
Nobody could prove much either way.
A well-documented anomaly was far more troublesome.
A trained observer.
A precise time.
A known location.
Multiple witnesses.
Independent instruments.
Radar.
Weather records.
Flight logs.
Photographs with provenance.
Physical effects.
Contemporaneous documents.
Now the possibilities began to shrink.
And when all the convenient answers were removed, whatever remained became scientifically expensive.
Anya wrote that phrase on the board.
GOOD MYSTERIES ARE EXPENSIVE.
The Wizard considered it.
Can we put that on a grant proposal?
No.
Why?
Because they will assume you mean the budget.
I do mean the budget.
She moved on.
