The Recovery is a novel written by Edith Wharton. The story is set in the aftermath of World War I and centers around a young American soldier named John Campton who is recovering from his injuries in a hospital in France. While there, he meets and falls in love with a nurse named Ellen. However, their relationship is complicated by the fact that Ellen is already engaged to another man, and John's own past is shrouded in mystery. As John struggles to come to terms with his injuries and the trauma of war, he must also navigate the complex social and romantic dynamics of the hospital. He befriends a group of fellow soldiers, each with their own stories of loss and recovery, and gradually begins to piece together the truth about his own past. The Recovery is a poignant and insightful exploration of the psychological toll of war and the challenges of rebuilding a life in its aftermath. Wharton's elegant prose and nuanced characterizations make this a compelling and deeply affecting novel. They moved about from room to room without exchanging a word. The vast noiseless space seemed full of sound, like the roar of a distant multitude heard only by the inner ear. Had their speech been articulate their language would have been incomprehensible; and even that far-off murmur of meaning pressed intolerably on Claudia's throbbing nerves. Keniston took the onset without outward sign of disturbance. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
