Most books about living off the grid begin with a shopping list. Solar panels. A battery bank. A chainsaw. A generator, a truck to fetch the fuel, and a hardware store at the end of the road.
This one assumes there is nothing to buy.
It assumes the power is off and is not coming back on any schedule you can count on. It assumes the hand tools you have are the hand tools you will have, and that when one breaks you make another or do without. It assumes everything you build has to come from what is standing, lying, or buried within carrying distance.
That is a hard premise, and it has one enormous advantage: it is the premise under which nearly every building on earth was raised until about 1850. Nothing here is invented. These are the methods ordinary people used at scale for centuries - set down in the order you actually need them.
What a book gives you that a video cannot is sequence and judgement. What has to be felled a year early. What must dry before the next lift can go on. Which season a well gets dug in, and why digging it in spring can kill the man in the hole. Volume One covers shelter and water, from the first week to a building you can overwinter in.
Inside these 137 pages and 38 step-by-step line diagrams:
- Reading the ground - siting, frost pockets, cold-air drainage, and three soil tests that decide what your walls can be made of
- Materials by hand - felling with axe and saw, the notch and hinge that steer a falling tree, levers, rollers and block and tackle, riving, hewing and pit sawing, splitting stone
- Walls - rubble trench foundations, mortise-and-tenon framing with draw-bored pegs, cob, adobe, drystone, wattle and daub, and log - with a decision table for choosing
- Roofs - laying out rafters with a string, the outward thrust that pushes walls over, riven shakes, thatch, and sod
- Closing the box - rammed earth floors, doors hung on wooden pintles with no hardware at all, windows before glass, lime plaster and limewash
- Water - reading terrain and plants to find it, spring boxes, hand-dug wells and the two things that kill well diggers, rope pumps, rainwater catchment, biosand filtration and what it does not remove
- Sanitation - the least interesting chapter here and the most likely to save a life
- A full worked example - one 12 x 16 ft cottage, every quantity and a nine-stage calendar, start to finish
Written plainly, with the dangerous steps marked clearly and the limits stated honestly. Volume Two covers food and heat; Volume Three covers the forge and the workshop.
