The world appears to be in terminal decline. Is there any era when this has not been so for some? But we can only call it as we see it. And what we see right now isn't pretty. Yes, the global averages say we're healthier and richer than we've ever been. But the day-to-day torrent of bad news tells us - and, at least here in Britain, the view of life around us tells us - a different story.
Environmentally, socially, morally and politically, things seem to have got out of hand. Most ominously of all, many of us appear to have lost our grasp on common sense - including those who govern us, many of whom are clearly either incoherent, incapable or both.
This little book is about suggestions as to how reason could overcome chaos. As neither politician nor journalist, Colin Costa offers ideas that others may shy away from: voting qualifications, regular referendums, the abolition of political parties, calming of the economy, assisted dying for all -- and many more.
His previous book, A Rationalist Manifesto (2019), took a long-term global view. Starting from that, this sequel focuses specifically on what could be done here and now in the UK. The reasonable revolution has to start somewhere.
