When an elderly Romani woman is harassed by a group of young thugs aboard a New York City subway train, the other passengers do what frightened strangers often do-they stare at their phones, avoid eye contact, and wait for someone else to intervene.
Only one passenger moves to help her: Nikos Vassilis, an aging Greek immigrant. The attackers knock him to the floor as the woman collapses from a heart attack. While the young men laugh and the other passengers remain frozen, Nikos hears her whisper a curse in Greek moments before she dies.
Then something small crawls out from beneath her coat.
At first, the deaths appear unrelated. One of the attackers is found twisted beneath his own bed. A passenger who filmed the assault dies while watching the recording. Another is discovered inside a locked subway car that has been out of service for decades. Each victim bears the same strange mark-and each death recreates a moment when that person could have helped but chose not to.
The curse was never meant only for the attackers.
It was meant for everyone on the train.
NYPD Detective Elena Marinos is assigned to the growing series of impossible deaths. The evidence leads him away from conventional police work and into forgotten immigrant folklore, ancient languages, religious history, and a university professor who believes the creature is not killing randomly.
It is conducting a harvest.
To stop it, the detective must return to the classroom, decipher the dead woman's final words, and discover why Nikos-the only man who tried to help-may be the key to ending the curse.
But every time the demon claims another soul, it grows larger, smarter, and harder to control.
And when the last passenger is gone, it will begin reaping the city.
Evil is not limited to those who commit cruelty. Sometimes it also claims those who silently permit it.
