This book examines the representation of indigenous athletes competing in the Australian Football League within popular print content. It is proposed that depictions of Australian indigenous athletes conform to racial stereotypes of the Other in sport and that narratives draw on the precept 'un' to convey contradictory meaning. For example, to praise indigenous athletic performance, as in unreal, and or to criticise underperformance on or off the field, as in unreliable or unworthy. The net effect of this is to highlight the changing significance of race and racism particularly in terms of the formation of broad-base social understanding of Australian indigenous peoples.
