Read the Groove is a rhythm-section focused study built around time feel, ensemble awareness, and stylistic clarity. Rather than centering on lead playing or isolated technique, this book focuses on how groove actually works; where rhythm, harmony, and interaction drive the music.
The studies bridge accurate rhythm reading with real-world application, helping students understand how rhythms sit inside styles such as swing, funk, blues, Afro-Cuban, Afro-beat, neo-soul, rock, and modern hybrid grooves. Emphasis is placed on subdivision control, consistency of pulse, and making musical choices that support the ensemble.
This book is written for guitarists, bassists, keyboardists, and drummers working together as a rhythm section. Guitar and keyboard players develop clear, economical comping. Bassists focus on placement, motion, and groove definition. Drummers refine pulse, backbeat placement, and subdivision awareness. All parts are approached through a shared rhythmic language.
An Advanced Harmony & Fretboard Appendix is included as a reference for shell voicings, power-chord vocabulary, and scale resources. These materials support the groove studies and are intended for application, not rote memorization.
