Razzle Dazzle: The Cost of the Act is a literary memoir about the gap between a life that looks extraordinary and the one actually being lived inside it.
Tommy spent forty years building both. The visible life had conference stages, beautiful homes, and a career leading organizations full of people who admired him without knowing him. The invisible life had a locked door, a hollow table, and a decade of addiction hidden in the hours that achievement provided cover for. He was not two different people. That was the problem.
Structured in three acts borrowed from the Chicago musical - a show about spectacle, misdirection, and the ancient bargain of giving them something so dazzling they never look behind it - the memoir traces both lives back to their origin: a gravel driveway, age six, performing strength for an audience of two. That moment installed an operating system that ran without his knowledge for thirty-four years. Everything that followed - the achievements and the hiding, the extraordinary and the invisible - ran on it.
Act One builds the man in third person. A boy in a motorhome between two countries. A twelve-year-old at the edge of the African savanna with a father who sold everything to show his son the world. A seventeen-year-old in the wings, holding a scholarship and a secret. At its center is Darwin - father, mechanic, adventurer - who died in a Utah hospice room in 2016 while Tommy administered the morphine and said the thing that needed to be said. That scene is the emotional axis the entire book rotates around.
Act Two runs on two tracks simultaneously. The visible track has a Palm Springs house with a pool lit at night and a department of thirty people who will thank him on his last day. The invisible track has a crawlspace behind pool equipment in a yard he made magnificent. Into this act arrives Evan - the man who saw through the razzle dazzle from the first night and never performed back at it. The hidden room was where Tommy rested from the performance. Evan was where the performance was never necessary. He chose the hidden room. Act Two is the cost of that choice, rendered without self-pity and without excuse.
Act Three shifts to first person. The pronoun change is not stylistic. It is the thesis. Cedar City. An easel in the late afternoon light. The unhurried work of rebuilding from what remains when the act is finally over - which turns out to be more than expected: a mother who kept the paintings on the walls through everything, friends who came when it counted, and Evan, still there, evidence that what Tommy was performing toward was always possible. He just took the long route.
The book closes not with resolution but with continuation. Tommy is forty years old, 30 days sober, and the light in Cedar City is doing what it always does in the late afternoon - turning everything the color of something being revealed.
Razzle Dazzle is for the one in four adults who have lived a version of this story, and for the people who love them. It does not ask for sympathy. It asks for recognition. There is a difference between being seen and being known. This book is the second one.
