Our hero, Rainbow Raccoon, starts off in the beautiful forests of Frankberry Hills. Like most woodland creatures, Rainbow spends every day playing in the woods with his friends. But Rainbow is no ordinary Raccoon. One day, Rainbow's friends play a prank on Rainbow by pushing him into the river. But to their surprise, Rainbow begins to float in the air instead.
As it turns out, Rainbow has a third eye, while most raccoons have two - and this extra eye gives Rainbow the power of flight. However, Rainbow's power is only triggered when Rainbow experiences great feelings of love or fear.
Unfortunately for Rainbow, an evil figure, Dr. Witherbee Scott, sees Rainbow floating in the forest, and recognizes an opportunity to take advantage of Rainbow's incredible abilities in order to make money.
One day, when Rainbow's friends are gone, the doctor steals Rainbow away from the forest and the friends that he loves.
Witherbee takes Rainbow into town to show Rainbow off to the public and charge people money to watch Rainbow fly. At first, Rainbow makes the best of the situation. Witherbee gets Rainbow the adoration of fans, as well as all the food and riches Rainbow could ever want. But soon, Rainbow's third eye begins to close shut, and he can no longer take flight.
Witherbee resents this, and punishes Rainbow by placing him in a dungeon until he learns how to fly again. Rainbow soon discovers what he'd been missing was the love and support of his friends in the forest. Upon this discovery, Rainbow's eye springs wide open, and he seeks to escape the dungeon and flee from Dr. Witherbee's grasp. Witherbee makes one final attempt to keep Rainbow captured and in the dungeon, but this time, Rainbow flies higher than he ever has before, and he makes his great escape.
Rainbow flies out of the dungeon, taking flight into the skies, amongst the stars, and has the journey of a lifetime. He sees things no raccoon ever has before, and dances amongst the cosmos above. It was an incredible experience, but he still misses his friends dearly.
When Rainbow first returns to Earth, he sees no one there. Although sad for a moment, eventually, Rainbow's friends make a triumphant return to the riverside where they used to play together. They celebrate their reunion by playing and dancing until the day turns to night.
