Welcome to The Rainbow Club-a place where everyone is welcome, everyone has a story, and everyone belongs!
Children are naturally curious about themselves and the people around them. They notice differences, ask questions, and want to understand words and ideas they may hear at home, at school, among friends, or in the wider world. The Rainbow Club by Quinn Danek, beautifully illustrated by Veronica Alonso Valdes, offers young readers an approachable introduction to the LGBTQ+ community through simple explanations and relatable characters.
From its opening pages, The Rainbow Club establishes a message of welcome and belonging. The book explains that the Rainbow Club represents the LGBTQ+ community and reassures readers that, no matter who they are or who they love, they are welcome and belong just as they are.
Rather than presenting complicated definitions, the book introduces readers to a group of characters who explain their identities in their own words.
Meet David, a boy who is gay and has a special connection to boys. Through David, children are given an age-appropriate explanation of what that special connection can mean-including feelings such as wanting to hug, hold hands, and perhaps marry someone one day.
Meet Gale, a lesbian who explains that she is a girl who loves another girl. Gale also shares that her aunt is a lesbian who has been married to her wife for three years, showing young readers an example of LGBTQ+ identity within a family.
Meet Skye, who is bisexual and explains having a special connection to both boys and girls. Skye's story also demonstrates the importance of having parents who help children understand their feelings and reassure them that those feelings are okay.
Meet Lena, who is transgender. Lena explains that the gender assigned to her when she was born never felt right and that she eventually realized that she/her pronouns fit her better. Her story introduces the idea of gender identity and pronouns in straightforward language intended to help young readers understand.
Readers are also introduced to Elliot, who identifies as queer and is still unsure about whom they have a special connection with or which pronouns are right for them. Elliot's story carries an important message for children who may not have everything figured out: uncertainty does not mean they don't belong.
Then there is River, who is nonbinary. River explains that being called a boy didn't feel right, but neither did being called a girl. River therefore uses they/them pronouns and describes being nonbinary simply: Not a girl, not a boy, just a person!
And the Rainbow Club isn't only about those who identify as LGBTQ+. Readers also meet Amber, an ally who supports members of the LGBTQ+ community even though she does not personally identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or nonbinary. Amber's story emphasizes the importance of showing support, especially because coming out can feel frightening.
Together, these characters create an introduction to different LGBTQ+ identities while emphasizing understanding, support, and belonging.
