Early Life and Entry into the Royal Court
Rai Parveen was not born into a royal family, but her talent was evident from a young age. Her melodious voice, captivating dance, and sharp intellect brought her to the attention of the benevolent ruler of Orchha, King Indrajit Singh. The King, a great patron of the arts, gave Rai Parveen a place in his court not only as a scholar but also as a respected artist and beloved companion. In her honour, King Indrajit Singh built the Rai Parveen Mahal (Palace), a symbol of their mutual respect and love. This beautiful three-story building, surrounded by lush gardens, was where Rai Parveen practised her art.
Akbar's Summons and Rai Parveen's Wisdom
Rai Parveen's fame as the Nightingale of Orchha spread far and wide, even reaching the court of the Mughal Emperor Akbar. Akbar, known for his curiosity and desire to collect rare talents, summoned Rai Parveen to his court. For King Indrajit Singh, this was a difficult moment, as refusing the Emperor's order would mean inviting hostility from the Mughal Empire. With a heavy heart, he prepared Rai Parveen for the journey to Agra.
Upon reaching Agra, Rai Parveen displayed her extraordinary wisdom. Before the Emperor, she humbly sought permission to recite a couplet:
Viniti Rai Parveen ki, suniye Shah Sujan. Jhoothi patar bhakat hain, baari, bayas, swan.
Through this couplet, Rai Parveen firmly expressed her loyalty to King Indrajit Singh. She stated that her heart and being were already dedicated to King Indrajit Singh, and for a great emperor to take a jhoothi patar (a used plate, or something that has already been claimed) would be beneath his dignity.
Akbar's Respect and Return to Orchha
Emperor Akbar, known for his wisdom and recognition of talent, immediately understood the profound message embedded in Rai Parveen's words. Impressed by her wise defiance and unwavering loyalty, Akbar allowed her to return to Orchha. He not only respected her wishes but also bestowed valuable gifts upon her, and Rai Parveen returned to Orchha as a heroine.
Legacy
Rai Parveen's story continues to live on as a legend in the history of Orchha. It stands as a testament to the power of wisdom, loyalty, and unwavering love in the face of imperial power. The Rai Parveen Mahal in Orchha still stands today, a silent witness to her extraordinary life, reminding us of a time when the intelligence and devotion of a wise woman touched the heart of an emperor.
