Raffles 1781-1826 is a detailed biographical study of Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, a pivotal figure in the expansion of the British Empire and the founder of modern Singapore. Written by historian R. Coupland, this work meticulously charts the life of Raffles from his humble beginnings to his rise as a visionary statesman and colonial administrator in Southeast Asia.
The narrative focuses on Raffles' tenure as the Lieutenant-Governor of Java and his strategic foresight in establishing a British port at the tip of the Malay Peninsula. Beyond his political and administrative achievements, the book explores Raffles' deep commitment to the study of local languages, natural history, and the abolition of the slave trade within the colonies. Coupland examines the challenges Raffles faced from both local powers and his own superiors in the East India Company, providing a nuanced portrait of a man driven by both imperial ambition and humanitarian ideals.
This work serves as an essential historical record for understanding the geopolitical shifts in the nineteenth-century Malay Archipelago. Raffles 1781-1826 offers profound insights into the origins of Singapore and the complex legacy of British maritime influence in the East.
