As a young girl, we never had much of anything. We always had enough to eat. I longed for the everyday things kids my own age had. I was longing for records every youngster played. I was longing for a sewing machine. I was longing for nice clothes, ones that were not handmade. I would go into the stores and gaze at the store-bought dresses and skirts knowing I could never purchase one. I would sketch the dress onto a piece of scratch paper and then take it home to my grandmother and she would show me how to make the dress. My name is Eleanor. When I was a kid, growing up I always liked to sew. One of my grandmotheras renters taught me how to make the flower garden pattern and I sewed a doll quilt. I loved sewing. My grandfather knew I did not have much material. He gave me fabric from a car seat he never used. I made shorts and a top out of it. On one occasion, I asked my mother if she had any old dresses. She gave me one that was worn out. I made a pair of shorts and a top out of it. I took the trim off the dress and made trim on my blouse. Remember, I did not have a sewing machine yet. My grandmother had an old treadle machine. It was a Singer and dated back to the 1920s. I loved that machine. My grandmother would show me how to make patterns out of newspapers. My grandmother lived below us in a cottage. We lived above her in an apartment we rented from her. It was nothing but a shack, but I did not realize it at the time.
