Beginning with the man behind the public mystery, it traces his journey from William Cunningham Deane Tanner to an established director working inside the rapidly expanding silent-film industry. It then returns to Apartment B on South Alvarado Street, where an ordinary household became the center of one of early Hollywood's most enduring unsolved crimes.
Drawing on the surviving official record, the narrative examines Taylor's last confirmed visitor, the uncertain sound-of-a-shot timeline, the medical evidence, the coroner's inquest, the firearm found elsewhere in the residence, the former employee who became an investigative focus, and the later confession stories that promised more certainty than the evidence could support.
The book also explores what happened when the investigation became public spectacle. Performers, employees, relatives, studio figures, and witnesses were pulled into a story that often treated proximity as guilt and rumor as discovery.
