Pretending: The Identities We Never Chose
What if the person you believe yourself to be was shaped long before you ever had the chance to choose?
In Pretending, Peter Phillip takes readers on a thoughtful journey through the invisible forces that shape our identities. From religion and language to culture, nationality, food, work, tradition, and love, this book asks unsettling but necessary questions about how much of our lives is inherited rather than chosen.
Drawing from personal experiences growing up in South Africa, returning to Malawi, traveling across cultures, and reflecting on human nature, Phillip explores how people passionately defend beliefs, customs, and identities they were simply born into. Rather than attacking any culture or worldview, Pretending invites readers to step outside their own perspective and see humanity through a wider lens.
Blending philosophy, memoir, and cultural observation, the book challenges readers to question assumptions, embrace curiosity, and appreciate the richness of human diversity. It is not a book that seeks to provide final answers. Instead, it is an invitation to think more deeply, listen more carefully, and recognize that beneath the identities we wear, our shared humanity is greater than our differences.
If you've ever wondered who you might have become had you been born somewhere else, Pretending is a conversation you won't soon forget.
