Prayer & Poetry: A Contribution to Poetical Theory is a profound exploration of the intersection between aesthetic experience and spiritual devotion. Written by the esteemed French literary critic and theologian Henri Brémond, this work delves into the psychological and philosophical parallels between the creation of poetry and the act of prayer. Brémond argues that poetry is not merely a linguistic craft but a mystical state that allows the human soul to glimpse truths beyond the reach of rational discourse.
Throughout this scholarly yet accessible volume, the author examines the nature of poetic prayer and the specific qualities that elevate a text from mere verse to a vehicle for transcendental experience. By comparing the insights of great poets with the writings of mystics, Brémond develops a compelling theory of poetry as a form of non-conceptual knowledge. This contribution to poetical theory remains a significant text for those interested in the philosophy of art, literary criticism, and mystical theology. Brémond's analysis offers a unique perspective on how the rhythms and images of poetry can mirror the deep silence of contemplative life, making it an essential read for scholars and lovers of literature alike.
