These poems are intended to be read alongside the first part of my autobiography Nemone. The first group were inspired by the years I spent on the Greek island of Mykonos, some of the happiest and most inspirational of my life. In 1961 when Jimmy, my husband, and I visited the island for the first time, it seemed totally unspoiled, a veritable earthly paradise. There were two boats a week to and from Piraeus: mass tourism was decades away. A few remarkable foreigners visited, scholars and archaeologists drawn to the neighboring archaic site of Delos, glitterati such as Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis, Princess Margaret and Yehudi Menuhin who built a house there and later such slightly sinister figures as Roy Cohn. Things changed, and not for the better, with the arrival of a daily boat and later still the building of an airstrip. I've dealt briefly with the drug culture and general debauchery which followed.
