Le 17 avril 1975, en moins de 48 heures, la ville de Phnom-Penh fut videe de tous ses habitants par des troupes de jeunes paysans armes jusqu?aux dents et repandant la terreur. Portant des bandeaux rouges sang sur le front, leur yeux etaient remplis de leur monstrueuse identite de tueurs sans pitie. Ma mere m?a ete enlevee a cause de cette guerre des Khmers rouges. Sa disparition m?a jetee dans une souffrance telle que je suis devenue une morte-vivante. Pol Pot, le chef des Khmers rouges, a eduques ses soldats avec la haine des gens de la ville qui etaient, selon lui, la cause de leur pauvrete et de leur misere. Moi et ma famille, tout comme le reste de la population Khmer, avons ete deporte a la campagne. Le Cambodge a alors ete aux prises avec une guerre pendant laquelle les Khmers rouges ont transforme le pays en un immense camp de concentration, un camp de la mort. Les Khmers rouges ont tue les personnes faisant partie de l?elite et s?ensuivit un genocide tuant la plus grande partie de la population Cambodgienne. Le quotidien des camps de concentration consistait en tortures humiliations, executions sommaires, famine provoquee, terreur?. Ces camps de concentration ont constitues une des periodes les plus sanglantes de ce pays durant le XXe siecle. J?etais perdue dans cet enfer, continuellement face a face avec la mort. Durant le regime de Pol Pot, des millions de personnes ont perdues la mort en moins de 4 annees. La vie des Khmers rouges etait basee sur des slogans tels que: Vous devez vous epiez les uns les autres; Vous garder ne rapporte rien; vous detruire n?est pas une perte; Mieux vaut tuer un innocent que de garder en vie un ennemi.
