En octobre 1945, s'ouvre devant la Haute Cour de justice le procès de Pierre Laval, chef du gouvernement dans les années de l'Occupation. D'aucuns voient en lui le traître absolu, d'autres le tiennent seulement pour le mauvais génie de Pétain. Ce procès est aussi celui de l'un des grands chefs politiques de la Troisième République, à de nombreuses reprises président du Conseil et ministre. Sorti du socialisme, fils de ses oeuvres, comblé par la réussite matérielle et riche d'amitiés et de relations en tous milieux, Pierre Laval, cible des caricaturistes et des chroniqueurs, n'avait dès les années trente laissé personne indifférent, dans l'admiration comme dans la détestation. Pacifiste, conciliateur voire combinard, accroché au pouvoir, interlocuteur de Hoover, de Mussolini, de Staline, de Hitler, il avait pu se croire l'un des arbitres du destin de l'Europe. Mais, en 1935, il porte la responsabilité de la crise économique comme en 1940 celle de la mort de la République et en 1944 de la collaboration de ses abaissements et de ses horreurs. De tout temps isolé, impopulaire, il sera jusqu'au bout convaincu d'avoir eu raison contre tous. Cette biographie, qui réinsère les années 1940-1945 dans le cours d'une destinée paradoxale, s'appuie sur des sources publiques et privées _ notamment celles du procès et de son instruction _, sur des témoignages, sur les notes personnelles de Pierre Laval ainsi que sur plusieurs Journaux inédits. Jean-Paul Cointet, ancien élève de l'ENS de Saint-Cloud, est professeur d'histoire contemporaine à l'université d'Amiens et assure également un enseignement à l'IEP de Paris.
