Why does inequality between women and men continue even when women are increasingly educated, economically active and legally protected?
This book explores a deeper answer: inequality is sustained not only by social institutions but also by the psychological processes through which society creates, preserves and transmits its beliefs about women.

A child does not enter the world believing that a boy is superior to a girl. Such beliefs are gradually learned through family, relationships, customs, language, literature, history, cinema and social institutions. Values become beliefs; beliefs influence attitudes; attitudes shape feelings; feelings influence behaviour; and repeated behaviour eventually becomes social reality.
The book therefore looks beyond the visible question of women's rights and asks a more fundamental question:
How can the social mind itself be reconstructed?
Beginning with the traditional images of womanhood, the book examines the daughter, wife, mother, widow and working woman, and explores how cultural expectations have often transformed women from autonomous persons into objects of protection, possession, sacrifice or social honour. Literature, history and cinema become important cultural mirrors in this examination.
The book also addresses some of the most painful manifestations of inequality-son preference, female foeticide and infanticide, dowry, bride burning, acid attacks, restrictions on education and employment, denial of ancestral property and the unequal treatment of widows and divorced women. These are not isolated problems. They are expressions of deeper beliefs concerning gender, power, ownership and social status.
But this is not a book merely about discrimination.
Its central concern is reconstruction.
The journey moves from inherited beliefs towards new values: from dependence to autonomy, from obedience to responsible assertiveness, from protection to partnership, and from social approval to self-respect. Education and lifelong learning are treated as instruments of transformation. The psychological development of self-concept, self-image, self-esteem, self-efficacy and self-empowerment provides the pathway through which a woman can recognise her own potential and progressively actualise it.
Marriage is reconsidered as a relationship of partnership rather than possession. Economic independence and equal property rights are examined as foundations of bargaining power and autonomy. Widow remarriage and the right to rebuild one's life are considered not concessions but expressions of human equality.
The book also recognises that women's empowerment cannot be achieved by changing women alone. Men, families, institutions and society must participate in the reconstruction. The objective is not a conflict between the sexes but a more humane relationship based on dignity, equality, trust and mutual respect.
The historical contribution of social reformers such as Raja Rammohan Roy reminds us that traditions once considered unquestionable can be challenged and transformed. The challenge before the present generation is to continue that process by identifying the invisible shackles that remain embedded in contemporary social consciousness.

Empowerment begins when a woman is no longer defined by what society expects her to be, but is enabled to discover, develop and actualise what she is capable of becoming.
